Dust jacket front cover top right corner is glued to upper board and dust jacket front flap is taped to front pastedown. Staining from adhesive to dust jacket front cover top right corner. Moderate splaying to boards. Inscribed by the author to photographer Ken Dean, who shot the author’s photograph used for the dust jacket. Acquired from Dean’s estate. Supplied from the same estate is an additional publisher’s dust jacket; Very Good and unclipped.

  • Oscar Hijuelos’s debut novel, preceding his 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction award for The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love (which made him the first Hispanic author to win the award).

  • Per the Oscar Hijuelos archive at the Library of Congress, Dean conducted a photo session with Hijuelos in New York City’s Riverside Park in 1983, the same park where Hijuelos died thirty years later and which is now home to the Oscar Hijuelos Clay Courts.
